Learning Unit Template
Each unit in language arts was presented using the following format:
- Using guided questions, prior knowledge and misconceptions are assessed by having students record what they know about the topic. A completion grade is assessed. The only loss of points results from posting "I don't know anything" because questions are basic to concepts covered in previous grades.
- Assign introductory resources including pertinent vocabulary. Students are directed to take notes (using Google docs) about knowledge that they have forgotten or did not know.
- Classroom discussion of basic ideas.
- Assign creation of a learning tool to help in retaining important basic information (e.g. flashcards, study guide).
- Assign resources that delve deeper into subject matter. Resources vary from text to audio and video presentations.
- Discuss information learned; allow time for questions.
- Assign online resources to practice unit skills.
- Assignment designed to apply skills. For example, creation of various sentence types in the sentence unit.
- Project: creation of a product; type dependent upon unit. Some require creation of a product that can be used to teach someone else; some require a visual to accompany another product (e.g. paragraph).
- Provide formative assessment to allow for further student learning. Students are required to correct errors and record them on an individualized "Common Errors" document.
- Review forum post of prior knowledge and create a new post outlining unit learning.
- Online summative assessment of retention and application of information necessary for further learning.
